How to Make Your Own Lung-Safe Cleaning Products at Home

Cleaning and disinfecting our homes has become more important than ever after the pandemic. Unfortunately, many store-bought cleaning products contain harmful chemicals and ingredients that can cause harm to those with lung disease, asthma or those affected by COVID. Even if you aren’t dealing with any respiratory illnesses, these chemicals can still cause irritation and increase your risk of developing unwanted symptoms. In fact, cleaning products are a contributing factor to 1 in 7 adult asthma cases.

Ingredients and products like bleach, ammonia, oven cleaners and aerosols all contain volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that release harmful gasses into the air and can cause long-term effects on a person’s lung health. To minimize your chances of developing these illnesses, avoiding store-bought cleaners and using all-natural, non-toxic products is the way to go.

Luckily, some of the best cleaning ingredients are ones you probably already have at home. Some of these ingredients include:

  • White vinegar
  • Castile soap
  • Hydrogen peroxide
  • Baking soda
  • Isopropyl alcohol
  • Salt
  • Lemons
  • Borax

Aside from the toxic chemicals, many store-bought products also have added fragrances that can be extremely irritating to those suffering from a respiratory illness or those of us who struggle with seasonal allergies. While we all love when our home smells clean and fresh, it’s best to avoid products with added fragrances. Instead, try using essential oils. Here are a few essential oil options that smell great, are lung-friendly and are great to clean with:

  • Lavender
  • Lemon
  • Tea tree
  • Frankincense
  • Pine
  • Bergamot

DIY Cleaning Recipes

Now that we know what ingredients to avoid and which ones are safe and lung-friendly, it’s time to make your own homemade cleaning products.

Disinfectant Wipes

Disinfectant wipes are great for cleaning and wiping down surfaces like countertops, tables and bathroom sinks. Here’s what you’ll need to get started:

  • A bowl with a lid
  • Microfiber cloths or dish towels
  • White vinegar and hydrogen peroxide or isopropyl alcohol
  • Castile soap
  • Your choice of essential oils (optional)

Once you have your ingredient, combine one part vinegar, one part peroxide or alcohol, one part warm water and a few drops of essential oils and mix them together in your bowl. Once mixed, roll your cloths or dish towels and leave them to soak in the mixture. Put the lid on and store it in a cool, dry place. Pull out the towels when you need them and once they’re dirty, wash the rags and complete the process.

All-Purpose Cleaner

An all-purpose cleaner is the go-to for all of your cleaning needs. Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Spray bottle (preferably glass)
  • 2 cups vinegar
  • 2 cups water
  • Citrus peels for fragrance

To get started put the citrus peels and vinegar in an airtight container and let it sit for a couple of weeks. Once the mixture has had time to rest, strain it and throw the peels away. You should be left with only the citrus-infused vinegar. Then put the vinegar mixture and water into the spray bottle and you’re ready to clean!
